About the Fabriam Centre
In 2002 Fabriam (then the North of England Microelectronics Institute) was fast running out of available office premises at Centre for Advanced Industry. This led to a joint venture with microchip manufacturer Atmel to create a world class serviced office centre for technology businesses, supported by the latest ICT infrastructure.
With financial support of £1.2m from One NorthEast, the Tyne & Wear Partner-ship and the European Regional Fund, the Fabriam Centre was set up to support local technology companies in their quest to develop leading edge intellectual property (IP) and create employment and wealth for the North East of England.
It was opened in 2003 by the Minister for Science & Innovation, Lord Sainsbury.
Only four months later, the project received another £25,000 from the Single Programme Fund as all units were already let to local SMEs. Overall the Fabriam Centre currently offers 2,800 square metres of high specification offices.
