The Centre recognises that for a modern
technology-based business the provision of a top rank
telecommunications function at a price that smaller firms can afford,
is a must-have facility.
The existing Centre for Advanced Industry - CAI, has invested heavily in dark fibre from a number of separate suppliers and is registered with RIPE as a Local Internet Registry (LIR). As such, it is able to issue IP addresses and to operate multi-homing which means that if one supplier goes off-line, the other continues, thus giving a very high availability of internet connectivity. Currently the main suppliers are THUS/Demon and BT/Onyx Internet. We have opened up bearers of 34Mb/s and 10M/bs respectively, but can easily increase this according to demand.
Fabriam is part of this network having a dual fully -redundant microwave link of 155Mb/s and 34M/bs into the CAI infrastructure. In addition there is a fast Ethernet connection into the SuperJanet network via Newcastle University. Telephony is provided in-house by a comprehensive digital switch on a pay-by-use basis.
In addition to the floor cabling the property benefits from the latest wireless network technologies throughout the area of both the accomodation and creative blocks, including coffee areas. There are a sufficient number of base stations to enable good reception for users moving around the premises with 802.11x enabled portables.
