The Broadband Network

Aggregated Broadband

Fabriam has been able to support SMEs internet requirements by developing a cost effective network across the North East. Eight business centres with around 200 tenant companies benefit fro this service, which is now provided and maintained 24/7 by Onyx Internet.

The broadband is dual sourced using BGP with 34Mb/s from THUS Demon via dark fibre with a further 20Mb/s from Onyx Internet from their DataBanx utility in Newcastle.

The distribution media are fibre, microwave and local wireless. Most of the links are dualled with single points of failure on the network similarly duplicated. All broadband is SDSL (same speed upload/download) with a wide range of user options from a standard low contention rate basic package to fully dedicated lines.

The business Centres using the facility are:

  • TEDCO: Quadrus, South Shields, Jarrow
  • Centre for Advanced Industry, North Shields
  • The Fabriam Business Centre, Silverlink
  • Saville Exchange, North Shields
  • Gateshead Intl. Business Centre and Greensfield Business Centre.

Fabriam's network won the 2004 regional E-Commerce award in the ‘Best Use of Broadband’ category.

Onyx have a policy of keeping the connectivity under review and invest in the latest technologies to provider users with cost effective solutions for internet use.
